ULYSSES
James Joyce's Addresses 1915-1922
THE following list details the addresses at which James Joyce stayed between 16 June 1915, shortly before leaving Austria for Switzerland, when he wrote to his brother Stanislaus claiming that he had written the first episode of his new novel Ulysses, and 12 October 1922, when he dropped in to hand in some further corrections to his text to Maurice Darantiere (Shakespeare and Company's printer) on his way south to Nice.
In preparing this list, we have made use of an earlier chronology prepared by Richard Ellmann (Letters II lviii-lxii) and of an important article, “The Joyce Calendar: a chronological listing of unpublished and ungathered letters by James Joyce”, compiled by Richard B. Watson and Randolph Lewis (Joyce Studies Annual 1992, pp.159-179). In addition, we have examined and read through for further internal evidence both published and unpublished correspondence of Joyce and his associates.
