  • Ulysses unlocated

[Odysseus tells Telemachus to wash himself and then arrays himself in his doublets before joining in with the false dance. Eurynome bathes Odysseus, anoints him with olive oil and dresses him in fine clothes. Athena adds to his good looks an unsurpassed radiance, and causes his hair to tumble thickly ‘like the hyacinth flower’.]

[Odysseus, still finding Penelope a tough nut to crack, threatens to sleep on his own and orders the nurse to ‘strew a bed for me to lie all alone’, for assuredly Penelope‚Äôs ‘spirit within her is as iron’.]

Penelope sector 4(ao)

Lampus & Phaeton dawnstars stayed in E, Nox in W.

Note: The ‘second’ bridal night of Odysseus and Penelope, when they eventually get down to it after much relating of the years' events (much as Bloom relates his day's events to Molly) is stretched out by Athena by her holding the night (Nox) ‘long in the utmost West’; and she ‘stayed the golden-throned Dawn by the stream Oceanus and suffered her not to harness the swift-footed steeds that bear light to men, Lampus and Phaeton, the steeds ever young’.
Penelope sector 4(ap)

Pen, reasons for chastity he might b- Blue

N.B & Mrs Santos Blue

  • Ulysses unlocated

[Her fair face is ‘steeped with beauty imperishable, such as that wherewith the crowned Cytherea is anointed, when she goes to the lovely dances of the Graces’.]

Note: Nora Barnacle and Mrs Santos, the wife of Trieste fruit-shop owner Nicolas Santos and a friend of the Joyce family. Joyce may intend both as models for Molly Bloom. Mrs Santos, apparently, remained indoors all day to preserve her complexion, and used face-cream lavishly [Ellmann 386]. She makes a suitable compound model for Molly (indoors all day) and Penelope.

Pen wheedles present Blue

[Penelope suggests that those hanging around in her husband's house should give her presents, each one superior to the next. They accede to her thinking, and ‘each man sent a henchman to bring her gifts’. From Antinous, she gets an embroidered robe, fitted with golden brooches and well-bent clasps; from Eurylochus a pair of earrings ‘with three drops well wrought, and much grace shone from them’; from Peisander a necklet, ‘a very lovely jewel’; and yet more from the others.]

Penelope sector 5(g)

Pen upbraids impure servant Blue

[Penelope upbraids Melantho, a girl she herself raised as a half-sister to Telemachus, but who now sleeps with Eurymachus and who ‘chid [the beggar Odysseus] shamefully’. Melantho comes to a sorry end.]

Note: Repeated at Sheet 18.019(ae). Bloom is suspected by Penelope (with justification) of carrying on with the maid while she is out shopping.

Speech of Achilles

[After the slaughter, the ghosts of the slain are led down into Hades by Hermes and meet there with the spirits of other Greek heroes such as Achilles, who question what has caused their untimely deaths. Achilles addresses Agamemnon, lamenting Agamemnon's ‘pitiful death’ not at the hands of the Trojans, but at those of a low murderer.]

Penelope sector 6(b)

funeral of Ach at sea, his Thetis

[Achilles' body was taken out of the battle by his companions to the ships and washed; and out of the sea came his mother along with the deathless maidens of the waters so that she could see his dead face, and a wailing lay over the face of the waters and the Achaeans still in the battle trembled, and would have taken to the hollow ships.]

Penelope sector 6(c)

18 dys mourning,

[For seventeen days and nights the Greeks waked Achilles and on the eighteenth they gave his body to the pyre.]

Penelope sector 6(d)

games high tomb on peaks

[When all was consumed save the white bones, Achilles' remains were placed in a pot along with the bones of Patroclus, but not with the dust of Antilochus, and the urn was buried under a great tomb ‘high on the jutting headland over wide Hellespont’ that it might be seen from the grey sea by sailors then and thereafter and marvelled at.
The mother of Achilles asks for funereal games to be held with glorious prizes, gifts of the gods, even of Thetis, the silver-footed.]

Penelope sector 6(e)

Ach & Ag. speaks of 1894 [as] 1904

[Achilles and Agamemnon discuss Troy, ten years earlier, as if it was today.]

Penelope sector 6(f)

[Agamemnon recalls when he came first to Ithaca to persuade Odysseus to accompany him to Troy. He points out that it took him a full month to do so.]

Penelope sector 6(i)

Note: This is obscure.
Penelope sector 6(j)

she weaves a deathshroud for Laertes which is Ul. coronation robe Red

[Penelope pretends to weave a winding-sheet for her father-in-law, Laertes.]

Note: The words ‘she weaves a deathshroud for’ are not crossed through.
Penelope sector 6(k)

Pen proud she is not Mrs Maybrick Blue

[On learning of the state of affairs in Ithaca, Agamemnon's ghost reminds his dismal companions that the constancy of Penelope will be honoured in times to come; while the treachery of the daughter of Tyndareus, ‘deviser of ill deeds’, who slew her wedded lord, shall be execrated for just as long.]

Note: See also UN5 (NLI.5B):013(b) and UN6 (NLI.4):020(dh). This is a very abstruse allusion to Homer. Molly thinks of and is shocked by the cold-bloodedness of Mrs Florence Elizabeth Chandler Maybrick (1862-1941), who was accused of poisoning her husband with arsenic. She was tried, convicted and sentenced to death on 7 August 1889. Her sentence was subsequently commuted (on 22 August) to life and she was ultimately released (on 25 January 1904).

Dream of 20 geese & eagle

[Penelope tells the beggar (Odysseus) about her dream. In it, a bent-beaked eagle came forth from the mountain and broke the necks of her twenty geese, the very geese she keeps in the house that eat wheat out of the water trough, and ate them. The beggar interprets the dream as foretelling the return of her husband (eagle) and the slaughter of the suitors (geese).]

Penelope sector 6(n)

[Penelope questions the veracity of dreams. Only those that enter by the gate of polished horn are true; those that do so by the gate of sawn ivory are false.]

Penelope sector 6(o)

(Field discusses the singular case of Zebehr Pasha, an Arab shiek and head of a great horde of natives in the Sudan:) the British Government seemed to have a great fear of letting him return to Egypt lest he should turn against them, and after the English occupptation of Egypt, had him remanded for safekeeping to Gibraltar. His detention is made as little irksome as possible. He is not confined in prison. He is even the occupent of the Governor's cottage.

[Field is speaking of the vegetation he encountered on ascending to the peak of the Rock.] In every sheltered spot the vine and figtree flourish, and the almond tree and the myrtle; you inhale the fragrance of the locust and the orange blossoms; while the clematis hangs out its white tassels, and the red geranium lights up the cold gray stone with rich masses of colour ... the horizon takes in two seas and continents ... you are standing on the very top of one of the Pillars of Hercules, the ancient Calpe, and in full view of the other, on the African coast, where, above the present town of Ceuta, who white walls glisten in the sun, rises the ancient Abylsa, the Mount of God. These are the two Pillars which to the ancient navigators set bounds to the habitable world.

longbearded jews ~ Green

Here Spaniards and Moors, who fought for Gibraltar a thousand years ago, are at peace and good friends, at least so far as to be willing to cheat each other as readily as if they were of the same religion. Here are longbearded Jews in their gaberdines; and Turks with their baggy trousers, taking up more space than is allowed to Christian legs; with a mongrel race from the Eastern part of the mediterranean known as Levantines; and another like unto them, the Maltese; and a choice variety of natives of Gibraltar, called ‘Rock Scorpions,’ with Africans blacker than Moors, who have perhaps crossed the desert, and hail from Timbuctoo. All these make a Babel of races and languages as they jostle each other in the narrow streets, and bargain with each other, and I am afraid sometimes swear at each other, in all the languages of the East.

A proud and shy instinct turns her mind away from the loosening of her bound-up hair - however sweet or longed for or inevitable and she embraces that which is hers alone and not hers and his also - happy distant dancing days, distant, gone for ever, dead or killed?

Jesus no wife & sister or mistress

[F]or nearly two thousand years the women of Christendom have prayed to and kissed the naked image of one who had neither wife nor mistress nor sister and would scarely have been associated with his mother had it not been that the Italian Church discovered, with its infallible practical instinct, the rich possibilities of the figure of the Madonna.

No thought of a more recent admiration, which is strong even to the point of being fetichism and has been well observed by her, crosses her mind now. The boots suggest their giver, her uncle, and she feels vaguely the forgotten cares and affections [for those] among [whom] she grew up. Kindly, not because they were kind to her but because they were kind to her girlself which is now gone.

Cdn't he go & fuck Mrs Breen? Blue

Richard, unfitted for adulterous intercourse with the wives of his friends because it would involve a great deal of pretence on his part rather than because he is convinced of any dishonourableness in it, wishes, it seems, to feel the thrill of adultery vicariously and to possess a bound woman Bertha through the organ of his friend.
